It certainly isn’t just in the name. The name of a brand does play a part in as much as a couture brand will not lend its name to a poor quality product. Couture brand products are made of high quality materials and every design aspect will have been carefully researched and tested for wear-ability and function. Materials such as beta titanium (very rigid and strong as well as lightweight) Optyl (very durable, lightweight and colourful plastic) and stainless steel (put through many processes to make it flexible, durable and hypo allergenic and lightweight) are used to manufacture high end spectacles. Lightweight is a keyword here and it should be noted that high street designer eyewear seems to be rather heavy due to the use of alloys. The other difference is that higher end frames tend to have finer details on them and are hand finished to produce a flawless look.
The other aspects to consider are the colours applied to the frames. Optyl, used by Gucci, Dior and Marc Jacobs, retains its colours and shape beautifully for years whilst poorer plastics tend to fade, become discoloured and lose their shape over even a short time. German manufacturers such ic-berlin and Mykita have won numerous awards over the last six years due to their design elements, functionality and wear-ability. We find the way they produce eyewear completely fascinating and would invite our customers to find out more either by asking us or by doing their own research on-line. It’s the way in which they apply colour to their stainless steel frames that we find really impressive. The colours on their frames will not chip or flake away, something very common with High street designer brands. However, it should be noted that there is no material that is scratch proof. Scratch resistant coatings can be applied to frames as well as lenses, but there is rarely any guarantees against it occurring. Lens manufacturers such as Hoya and Essilor are now providing 2-3 yr guarantees on their latest lens innovations to minimise scratches and this does provide you with peace of mind if your lenses do become scratched. They will replace them free of charge under their warranty.
